Karel Martens

Karel did not study graphic design because it was not considered a career at the time and therefore, did not exist as its own course of study. In school he took many classes such as painting, sculpture making, illustration, and publicity. Today he is recognized as one of the most influential practitioners in graphic design.

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall is a Canadian artist best known for his large-scale back-lit cibachrome photographs and art history writing. Wall has been a key figure in Vancouver's art scene since the early-1970s. His photographic tableaux often take Vancouver's mixture of natural beauty, urban decay and postmodern and industrial featurelessness as their backdrop.

Harold Allen

Allen explored architecture, places, memorial sculpture, Egyptomania, and other subjects that he found interesting. He produced black and white gelatin silver print photographs.

Harry Callahan

Callahan was famous as a street photographer. His "technical photographic method was to go out almost every morning, walk through the city he lived in and take numerous pictures. He then spent almost every afternoon making proof prints of that day's best negatives. Yet, for all his photographic activity, Callahan, at his own estimation, produced no more than half a dozen final images a year." (Wikipedia)

Frederick Sommer

"The subjects of Sommer’s photographs are strikingly diverse. They range from disorienting landscapes and macabre aspects of the natural world to surreal arrangements of found objects and pure abstractions."

Danny Lyon

Photographer Danny Lyon's career reaches from the March on Washington to the Occupy movement and beyond. He captures enduring images, as photographer Vincent J. Musi says in his introduction, "with the eye of a documentarian and the soul of a radical." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AejmxMEW0Gk

Kenneth Josephson

Kenneth Josephson's conceptual photography experiments with playful illusion to explore and question his medium. Some of his work reminds us that regardless of how real a two-dimensional image may appear, it is still merely an illusion.

Joseph Sterling

Sterling’s Master’s  thesis was called “the Age of Adolescence,” a heartfelt but technically rigorous photographic essay describing the hope, energy and uncertainty that defined the world of American working class teenagers – created within the aesthetic framework of pattern and design taught at the ID (and the Bauhaus before it).

TIPS

  • Clouds are your friends. Overcast skies provide great light coverage without the shadows of direct sunlight.

  • Try out new angles. Be daring and climb on things. Lie down or kneel on the ground. You’ll see your subject in a whole new way.

  • Candid photos are more compelling. Posed pictures don’t feel as authentic as photos that capture people in their element.

  • Ditch cheesy editing tricks. A lot of times preset editing filters and effects look cheap and unprofessional.

  • When it comes to composition, be aware of everything. The background can be just as important as the subject.

  • Change up your subjects. Look at the things around you in a different light. You’ll learn to see beauty in everything.

  • Experiment! Never be afraid to do something wrong. The trash bin is a very underrated tool.
