Short Stories
The Story Experience

-we all tell stories and want to listen to stories others tell us.
-we remember times when somebody read to us or told us a fascinating tale
-allows our imagination to be swept away as we are taken into others’ lives
-come to understand motivations and approach to life as they react to conflict
*read All Summer in a Day-Ray Bradbury – page 283 from Sense and Feeling
*read I Wish You Were Here-Frank Jones - page 13 from Inside Stories I
Character
-as we move through life, we get to meet and become close to many people
-some are just acquaintances but others will become lifelong friends.
-reading gives us access to characters we can get to know well simply by turning pages.
-we are provided an opportunity to grow in awareness and understanding of ourselves and others
-we get to know people in the following ways:
-
Appearance, what they say, do and what others say about them or how they react to them.
-
What the character thinks and how they feel also helps reveal character
-
Writer can also just tell us what the character is like
-an acronym we can use to help us with this is STEAL
S=what the character says
T=what the character thinks
E=how the character affects other
A=the characters’ actions
L=what the character looks like/body language
We are dealing with people often, but characters can be people, animals, robots, etc
Types of Character
Protagonist – main character in the story
Antagonist – obstacle the protagonist is trying to overcome. Might be a person, but can be a situation
*can also be major and minor characters
After talking more about how character is important in writing, do the following personality tests: what kind of 'character' are you? What traits do you possess? What do you find value in?
*some of these tests, other than Meyer-Briggs should be taken with a grain of salt (use your claim testing ability).
